Most Investors Don’t Know the Difference Between Alpha & Beta(Benchmark) | INDEX FUND vs ACTIVE FUND

youtube

Most investors think every mutual fund has the same job. It doesn’t. Let me explain the difference between a Beta Generator and an Alpha Generator. 📌 Beta Generator Nippon India Nifty Smallcap 250 Index Fund Its job is simple: Track the Smallcap 250 Index. If the index delivers:• 12% CAGR → you get roughly that• 18% CAGR → you get roughly that• 8% CAGR → you get roughly that No stock-picking skill required. No fund manager brilliance required. This is your Beta Engine. ━━━━━━━━━━ 📌 Alpha Generator Nippon India Small Cap Fund Its job is different. The fund manager tries to beat the Smallcap 250 Index by deciding: • Which stocks to overweight• Which stocks to avoid• When to enter• When to exit If the manager is skilled → Alpha. If not → Underperformance. This is your Alpha Engine. ━━━━━━━━━━ The important part: Alpha is never guaranteed. Scenario A Index Return = 14%Fund Return = 18% Alpha = +4% Excellent. ━━━━━━━━━━ Scenario B Index Return = 14%Fund Return = 13% Alpha = -1% The manager failed to add value. ━━━━━━━━━━ Personally, I don’t think investors should blindly choose either. The real question is: Do you want market returns? Or do you want to bet on manager skill?
