Sharad Kohli, Economic Analyst & Dilip Chenoy, Economic Analyst Moderator: Teena Jha, Journalist The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has completed 12 years, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards financial inclusion. Launched on 28th August 2014 with the objective of ensuring access to basic banking services for all, the scheme has expanded access to formal banking, savings, credit, insurance, pensions and digital payments, particularly among underserved sections of society. With more than 59 crore Jan Dhan accounts and total deposits of ₹3.17 lakh crore, the scheme has also strengthened the delivery of Direct Benefit Transfers and other welfare benefits through the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity. Women account holders constitute approximately 56 per cent of the beneficiaries, while 78 per cent of the accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas.
