The man who predicted the 2008 crash and made 9.5% while the market fell 40% says the safest place most people put their money is actually the worst possible investment. Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, says cash is "guaranteed almost to have the worst return over the longer period of time" because inflation eats it away at 3.5 to 4% per year, and even earning interest doesn't keep pace after taxes. He walks through every option available to the average person. Cash feels safe but loses value every year. Stocks can grow but crash 60 to 70% in a bear market. Gold is "the only financial asset that is not somebody else's liability," meaning nobody has to honour a promise for it to be valuable. Bonds pay interest but get hurt when inflation rises. Property provides forced savings and better tax treatment. And Bitcoin is a form of money that can't be printed, but it can be tracked by governments, hacked by quantum computing, and banned by regulation. Dalio keeps roughly 1% of his portfolio in Bitcoin and prefers gold for hard money protection.
