Presentations from the Quivira Coalition's 9th Annual Conference, November 10-12, 2010, in Albuquerque, NM The Carbon Ranch: Using Food and Stewardship to Build Soil and Fight Climate Change Right now, the only possibility of large-scale removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere is through plant photosynthesis and other land-based carbon sequestration activities. Strategies include: enriching soil carbon, farming with perennials, employing climate-friendly livestock practices, conserving natural habitat, restoring degraded watersheds and rangelands, and producing local food. Over the past decade, many of these strategies have been demonstrated to be both practical and profitable. A carbon ranch bundles them into an economic whole with the aim of creating climate-friendly landscapes that are both healthy ecologically and the source of healthy food. In this conference we explored this exciting new frontier and heard from carbon pioneers from around the world. About the speaker: Abe is a cattle grazier in St. Albans, VT, and the founder of New Soil Matrix, Inc.and New Soil Quantum, Inc. Abe is a co-founder of the Soil Carbon Coalition, which is sponsoring the Soil Carbon Challenge, a local/global contest to see how quickly land managers can accrue carbon in soils. Previously, he co-founded Carbon Farmers of America, a Vermont farmer-owned company that introduced the idea and practice of accelerated topsoil formation as a means of mitigating and adapting to climate change to many farmers and policy makers around the world. Abe's focus for the last 15 years has been studying and developing management tools to grow new topsoil as a means of achieving food, water and climate security and reversing desertification. He has carried that work through to New Soil Matrix to assist agricultural producers and policymakers to scale and monetize topsoil formation toward sustainably increasing production and cost-effectively meeting the environmental security priorities of our time.

About This Footage

The Visionary Approach to Carbon Sequestration

In this remarkable clip from 2010, Abe Collins, a pioneering cattle grazier and founder of New Soil Matrix, Inc., presents his groundbreaking concept of "carbon ranching" at the Quivira Coalition's 9th Annual Conference. The footage is notable not only for its relevance to climate change mitigation but also for Collins' innovative approach to reversing desertification through accelerated topsoil formation.

Collins' talk, titled "The Carbon Ranch: Using Food and Stewardship to Build Soil and Fight Climate Change," offers a compelling vision for large-scale carbon sequestration. He argues that the only viable solution lies in plant photosynthesis and land-based carbon sequestration activities. By bundling various strategies such as enriching soil carbon, farming with perennials, and conserving natural habitats, Collins proposes creating "climate-friendly landscapes" that are both ecologically healthy and productive.

What sets Collins apart is his emphasis on the economic viability of these practices. He has spent 15 years studying and developing management tools to grow new topsoil, which he believes can achieve food, water, and climate security while reversing desertification. His work with Carbon Farmers of America and the Soil Carbon Coalition demonstrates a commitment to scaling up these solutions.

The clip is also significant for its timing. In 2010, the world was grappling with the consequences of climate change, and Collins' message resonated with conference attendees seeking practical and profitable strategies for mitigation. Today, his ideas remain relevant as governments and corporations increasingly recognize the importance of carbon sequestration in addressing global warming.

Collins' expertise is not limited to theory; he has successfully implemented these practices on his own cattle ranch in Vermont. His experience serves as a model for others looking to transition their land management strategies towards more sustainable and climate-resilient approaches.

The clip's 7:44 duration provides an intimate glimpse into Collins' presentation style, which is engaging, informative, and accessible. He effortlessly weaves together complex scientific concepts with practical applications, making his message compelling and easy to understand.

For those interested in sustainable land use practices, carbon sequestration strategies, or simply innovative approaches to addressing climate change, this clip offers a unique opportunity to learn from a visionary expert like Abe Collins. His work serves as a testament to the power of human ingenuity in finding solutions to some of our most pressing environmental challenges.
