Index Funds vs Picking Stocks — The Real Math
The number nobody shows you: 92.89% of professional fund managers lost to a brain-dead index over 20 years. We put index funds vs picking stocks in the ring — both sides on screen, official numbers, two duels, one winner per round. Three startling facts, all official: The SPIVA U.S. Scorecard (S&P Dow Jones Indices, Year-End 2025, data through Dec 31, 2025): 78.78% of large-cap funds underperformed the S&P 500 over 1 year, 88.96% over 5, 85.59% over 10, 89.93% over 15, and 92.89% over 20. 2025 was the 4th-worst year in the scorecard's 25-year history. Only 34.61% of funds even survived 20 years — and the scorecard counts the dead ones too. A finance professor studied every US stock from 1926 to 2016 and found 1,092 companies — 4.3% of all stocks — produced ALL of the market's net wealth above Treasury bills. 58% of stocks never beat the T-bill. Picking stocks means hunting 4% of the haystack — and missing is catastrophic. The fee is the duel, decided before a single stock is picked: the average active equity fund charges 0.64% vs 0.05% for the average index fund (ICI, 2025). On $100,000 at our illustrative 8% over 30 years, that fee gap alone devours $150,510. Ravi the Picker turns $10,000 into $38,697; Sofia the Indexer turns the same $10,000 into $46,352 — same 20 years, same example market. Ravi (34) and Sofia (36) are fictional examples; every statistic is from an official source. The 8% growth figure is an illustrative example assumption, not a promise. Fair is fair: one 2025 study argues SPIVA's method is harsh on active funds — even the friendliest math still favors the index.
