The 457(b) Advantage: Withdraw Early Without the 10% Penalty

2020s2026Tool Reviewyoutube

Most retirement accounts charge a 10% penalty if you take money out before age 59 1/2. For many state and local government employees, there's an exception built into one account: the governmental 457(b) plan. If early retirement is on your radar, that one rule can change the math on when you're able to step away from work. In this video, I cover how a governmental 457(b) works, including the 2026 contribution limits and why it has its own limit separate from a 401(k) or 403(b). I explain where the advantage comes from, the two things that still apply (income tax and leaving your employer), and walk through a hypothetical example of Lisa, who retires at 52. We also cover the fine print that can erase the advantage, including rolled-in money and the rollover trap, a real example from Kiplinger, and how the 457(b) compares with the Rule of 55 and 72(t) payments.
