They simply follow rules, buying whatever is in the index and ignoring everything else. If every investor only bought index funds, there would be no one left to research companies, no one deciding what’s actually worth investing in. That means no real price discovery. In theory, stock prices would stop reflecting true value and instead just reflect index inclusion. Innovation could slow. Capital might not flow to the best ideas. Now, this isn’t likely to happen. Active investors still play a huge role in the market. But it shows something important. Index funds work because active investors exist.
