The 5 types of FIRE, explained
FIRE is how people retire 20 years before everybody else. Financial Independence, Retire Early works by investing hard up front and then living off those investments. The rule of thumb is to invest 25 times your annual living expenses. There are five versions of it, and each one fits a different lifestyle. Lean FIRE means retiring on under $40K a year. Bare bones living, and you only need about $1 million invested. Regular FIRE is the most common. You're living on $80K to $100K a year, so you need $2 million to $2.5 million invested. Fat FIRE is for anyone who wants more than $100K a year. That takes $2.5 million minimum, and $5 million is a lot more comfortable. Barista FI is semi-retiring early and working a part-time, lower-stress job for income and benefits, which takes pressure off the nest egg. Coast FIRE might be my favorite. You invest hard early, then let compound interest do the heavy lifting while you coast to retirement age. The earlier you start, the more time your money has to compound. If you start in your 20s and invest consistently, you can hit this in your 40s. That's 20 years of freedom everyone else is still chasing.
