Mutual Fund vs ETF vs Stocks: What Do You Actually Own?

2020s2026Tool Reviewyoutube

Understand What You Actually Own. Mutual fund vs ETF vs stocks—what are you actually buying? This 64-second Indian investing explainer compares fund units, exchange-traded fund units and individual company shares. Jain Brokers & Co. explains: • How mutual funds pool investors’ money • Active management versus index tracking • Applicable NAV pricing versus ETF exchange prices • Brokerage, bid–ask spreads, liquidity and tracking differences • Direct stock ownership and diversification • Why SIP is an investing method, not a separate asset class IMPORTANT DISTINCTION An ETF is itself a fund. In this comparison, “mutual fund” means a conventional non-exchange-traded open-ended fund. Conventional fund transactions generally follow applicable net asset value—NAV—pricing rules. ETF units trade on an exchange during market hours at market prices, which can differ from NAV. With funds, you own units rather than directly holding every underlying security yourself. With direct stocks, you select and own individual company shares. Risks depend on the underlying investments, concentration, costs and investor behaviour. Diversification does not eliminate market risk, and no category is automatically best for everyone. Welcome to Jain Brokers & Co., your destination for accessible financial education, Indian investing fundamentals and responsible financial decision-making. Which concept should we explain next: mutual funds, ETFs, SIPs or direct stocks? Like, save and share this Short with someone beginning their investing journey.
