Is the Government Planning to Remove LTCG Tax on Equity Investments?
Before you believe the news, here's what you need to know! There has been no official announcement confirming the removal of LTCG tax on equity investments. Investors currently face two separate costs: Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on eligible transactions and capital gains tax when they realise taxable profits. In October 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed the government's willingness to hear investors' and other stakeholders' views on equity taxation ahead of the Budget. Meanwhile, an SBI Research report suggested considering a reduction or removal of LTCG tax, alongside a possible increase in the holding period to 2-3 years. These discussions and recommendations fuelled speculation on social media. But remember: A proposal is not a government decision! Until an official change is announced, plan your investments according to the existing tax rules. #Itcg#tax#charteredaccountant#finance#gst [FII, Foreign investors, STT, Capital Gain Tax, Tax Planning, Tax Saving, SBI, Finance Act, Budget]
