Some of the most dangerous retirement advice sounds completely reasonable. “Always pay off your mortgage before retirement.” “Always wait until 70 to claim Social Security.” “Never buy an annuity.” “Put everything into a Roth.” The problem? Those strategies might be perfect for one person and completely wrong for someone else. Your retirement decisions should depend on YOUR income, taxes, Social Security benefits, investments, healthcare costs, retirement age, family situation, risk tolerance, and goals. There are very few financial strategies that should begin with the words “always” or “never.” A good retirement plan isn’t built around what worked for your friend, coworker, neighbor, or someone you watched online.
