Mutual funds allow investors to pool their money together to invest in a diversified portfolio of shares, managed by an Asset Management Company and an experienced fund manager. This structure makes high-priced stocks, which might be unaffordable for an individual, accessible by allowing smaller contributions from many investors. Key aspects of mutual funds include: Investment Mechanism: By pooling resources, investors can benefit from the growth of underlying assets, such as stocks. If the asset value increases, all investors share in the profits. Investment Types: Funds can be categorized based on their investment focus, such as Large Cap, Mid Cap, Small Cap, Sector-specific (like Banking and Finance), or Debt Funds. Pricing (NAV): The Net Asset Value (NAV) represents the price of a unit in a mutual fund, calculated daily by subtracting total liabilities from total assets and dividing by the total outstanding units. Investments made by 3 PM typically receive that day's NAV, while later investments are processed at the next day's rate. Costs and Management: Funds have an Asset Under Management (AUM), which is the total money invested in the fund. Investors pay an Expense Ratio, which is a percentage of the AUM charged to cover management costs.
