The FIRE Movement Has a Plus-One Problem
032: Almost every FIRE plan is secretly written for one person. One saver, one number, one clean exit. But most of us aren't doing this alone. There's a partner in the picture, and their career, their timeline, their money and their sense of safety are all wired into the decision. The spreadsheet has no column for any of that. This is the close of Relationships month, and it's the conversation the FIRE community tends to avoid. What happens to the person you love when you retire early and they don't? Your finish line can land right in the middle of their career. Two unequal incomes make "your money" and "our money" a lot less tidy than it sounds. There's a reversal nobody really plans for, where the person whose plans everything used to bend around changes, and the higher earner becomes the one calling the shots.
