Should I take Social Security before my full retirement age?

Strategy GuidePortfolio Reviewyoutube

Should you claim Social Security before reaching full retirement age? 🤔 As a CFP® with 25 years of experience, I've guided countless clients through this exact question—and the answer is rarely what people expect. It's not just about maximizing your monthly check. The real question is: what makes sense for your complete retirement strategy? Consider this scenario: If you retire at 62 and need $4,000 monthly to cover expenses, claiming a reduced benefit of $1,500 means you're only drawing $2,500 from your portfolio. But if you wait until 67 for a higher benefit, you'll need to pull that entire $4,000 from your investments for five full years. Claiming earlier can actually protect your retirement accounts during your highest-spending years—and shield you from sequence-of-returns risk if the market drops early in retirement. Your health, tax bracket, other income streams, and longevity expectations all factor into this decision. There's no one-size-fits-all answer. For help creating a personalized Social Security strategy that coordinates with your retirement income plan, schedule a call through the link in my bio.
