For the longest time, we didn’t know where most of the gender wage gap came from. It wasn’t women’s inability to negotiate their wages. It wasn’t wage discrimination either (although discrimination certainly exists). Nobel-prize winning economic historian, Dr. Claudia Goldin (also a prof at Harvard), has done some excellent research in this area to shed light on the problem. She says the majority of the gender wage gap can be explained by greedy work. Critically, the decision to specialize in greedy vs flexible jobs comes up in a mom’s mid-to-late 30s, when partnership and tenure decisions are made. Even if she re-enters a greedy job after the kids are older, she never catches up to the dad who stayed in a greedy job all along. Claudia Dale Goldin (born May 14, 1946) is an American economic historian and labor economist. She is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University.
